Juan José Acosta is One of North America's Top 40 Young Lighting Designers
Designer Juan José Acosta was included in the list of North America's forty most promising up-and-coming lighting designers released on February 26 by Lighting Magazine.
Twenty-one women and 19 men from across the North American continent make up the inaugural 40Under40 Class of 2018. Nominated by their principals and peers and selected by a panel of industry experts, the members will receive global recognition culminating in a glamorous international presentation ceremony in New York in March.
"We received an overwhelming response from the profession", said Ray Molony, chairman of the selectors committee. "We had over 120 young professionals from across the USA, Canada and Mexico nominated and the calibre of the nominees was incredibly high. The selection committee was looking for achievement above and beyond normal professional practice, with an emphasis on extracurricular achievements and efforts to build and support the profession and its development."
Designer Juan José Acosta showed the selection committee his work in iconic New York City projects like the Woolworth Building and 40 Bleecker, contrasting these luxury projects with his efforts to promote lighting resiliency in post-hurricane Puerto Rico.
Expressing gratitude towards the selector committee, Juan said he is "convinced that these experiences, along with many others that the selectors witnessed in my portfolio, will enrich the storybook of the 40Under40 2018. Hopefully, hearing about my adrenaline rush at the top of the Woolworth Building will make a kid in the Bronx curious about light; or hearing about resilient post-hurricane lighting will inspire an architecture student in San Juan to embark on a lighting journey of her own. If sharing my story will help someone else start writing their love letter to light, then the time I spent working on these projects was worth it."
